Abacus Capital is a family-controlled financial services business founded in 1995 by Hogi Hyun, a former Bankers Trust Company Managing Director. Abacus Capital is an Asian Investment, Asset Management and Advisory group that is headquartered in Singapore with operations in Indonesia and affiliates throughout Southeast Asia. Abacus Capital serves a select group of mostly family-owned business groups.


Hogi Hyun

Mr. Hyun is responsible for overseeing all investment and advisory activities at Abacus Capital, as well as managing relationships with Business Family clients. He was formerly a Managing Director at Bankers Trust Company in Singapore where he established and managed its corporate finance, risk management and investment management businesses for Southeast Asia. While in Singapore, Mr. Hyun conceived and ran the Bankers Trust Regional Currency Funds and Global Guaranteed Funds. Prior to his move to Singapore, he was based in Bankers Trust Company's Hong Kong office where he established its Capital Markets Division for Southeast Asia. Mr. Hyun is currently a Member of the National Library Board, and had previously served on the Investment Panel of The Enterprise Challenge (a S$20 million venture fund backed by the Singapore Prime Minster's Office) and Board of Directors of the Singapore Civil Service College.

Mr. Hyun graduated Magna cum laude from Yale University, USA in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in East Asian Studies. He studied at the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute and Fudan University in Shanghai, and holds the Grand Diplôme from La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine in Paris.

At INSEAD, Dr. Randel Carlock is the first Berghmans Lhoist Chaired Professor in Entrepreneurial Leadership, founding Director of the Wendel International Centre for Family Enterprises and the Family Enterprise Challenge Executive Program (France and Singapore).

He has an MA in education and training, MBA in strategic management (1983) and a PhD (1991) in organization development from the University of Minnesota. His doctoral dissertation explored managing high growth entrepreneurial firms. He has also completed a post graduate certification in family therapy at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, University of London (1998) and a certificate in psychodynamic counseling at Birkbeck College, University of London (1999). He was awarded a Certificate in Family Business Advising with Fellow Status (2001) by The Family Firm Institute, Boston, Mass. (USA).

Dr. Carlock is the author of several articles, books and case studies. Dr. Carlock also co-authored “Strategic Planning for the Family Business: Parallel Planning to Unite the Family and Business” with John L. Ward; and “Family Business on the Couch: A Psychological Perspective” with Manfred F. R. Kets de Vries and Elizabeth Florent-Treacy.

Dr. Carlock spent 25 years in business serving first as an executive with Dayton-Hudson (now Target Corporation) and as a CEO and Chairman of a NASDAQ listed corporation he founded. He serves as a consultant and advisor to several of the world's largest family businesses.

Sara Hamilton is the founder and CEO of Family Office Exchange. Recognized for her expertise on sophisticated owners of wealth and their family offices, Ms. Hamilton serves as a strategic advisor to sophisticated investors with assets lasting beyond one generation. Ms. Hamilton has focused her expertise on the $50+ million market since 1986, when she joined the Personal Trust Department of Harris Bank. Her initial research identified the financial services needed by family groups with more than $1 billion in assets. This research led to her recognition of the unique needs of financial families. She subsequently spearheaded the first national conference designed to educate family principals and family office managers. Prior to joining Harris Bank, Ms. Hamilton spent eight years in marketing and client relations’ management for AT&T in Ohio and Illinois.

In 2009 and 2010, Ms. Hamilton was named as one of the “Top 50 Women in Wealth Management” by Wealth Manager. As one of the US’s leading spokespersons about private wealth management and the family office concept, she is a frequent speaker at global conferences for private investors and has been featured in a variety of publications, such as Fortune, the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal. Ms. Hamilton recently co-authored “Family Legacy and Leadership: Preserving True Family Wealth in Challenging Times” with Mark Haynes Daniells. She is Editorial Advisor for Private Wealth Management (Campden Press, London), and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Private Portfolio Management. She also teaches an Executive Education course on wealth management at the University of Chicago.

Ms. Hamilton holds a master’s of business administration from the University of North Florida and a bachelor of arts from Vanderbilt University.

Stuart Lucas is the chairman of Wealth Strategist Network LLC., an independent provider of strategic wealth management educational services to individuals, families, and financial institutions. As a fourth-generation heir of E. A. Stuart, founder of the Carnation Company, he also co-manages his own family’s investment office. Author of the critically acclaimed book “Wealth: Grow It, Protect It, Spend It and Share It”, Mr. Lucas has been featured in the news media including CNBC, Newsweek, BusinessWeek, Worth, Bloomberg Television (Europe) and El Pais (Spain). He also designed and teaches an Executive Education course on private wealth management at the University of Chicago and is a regular speaker to wealth owners and financial professionals.

Mr. Lucas was formerly the senior managing director of the Ultra High Net Worth Group within Private Client Services at Bank One, the general manager of Wellington Management Company’s European operations and the assistant portfolio manager of a Forbes Honor Roll mutual fund. With a long-standing commitment to public service, Mr. Lucas serves on the boards of the National Public Radio Foundation, the Stuart Foundation and the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. He has a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, an MBA from Harvard Business School and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
